    Stassi
Here is a portrait I painted of a beautiful Maine Coon cat named Stassi. I had to combine two photos to get this pose, and her lovely fur was challenging. The background and the piece she is resting on went through some changes. I loved painting her however! It was pure fun.

  • About the Artist

    Hi, I'm Linda Wells.

I have been an artist all my life. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I attended the University of New Mexico and later moved to San Francisco, California, where I studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After moving to Boulder, Colorado, I earned an Associates degree in Advertising and Graphic Design from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver.

I worked as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator for many years, all the while continuing to paint and enter juried shows. These days I am concentrating on my fine art, and my subject matter includes landscapes, animals, and still lifes. I am also an accomplished portrait painter, both of people and animals. My equine art has been featured in articles in both Horses in Art and Western Horseman magazines.

After many years of painting only in transparent watercolors, I now enjoy painting primarily in oils on canvas. Pet portraits are my specialty, and I love getting to know people and their beloved pets.

I am an Associate member of Oil Painters of America, and Women Artists of the West.

My other fine artwork can be seen at lindawellsart.com.

And this is Gypsy, my studio manager.

She likes to pose for portraits in her free time.
  • Tips for Taking Photos of Your Pet

If you can, please provide several different photographs of your pet. If you have a favorite photograph that you would like to use, please make sure there is adequate detail and good lighting. Sometimes providing several different photographs of the subject is helpful.

    Do This

The photograph should be relatively close-up so your pet fills the frame.

    Avoid This

Sometimes early-morning or late-afternoon sunlight can be too intense. I have found that bright
shade works the best to accentuate the details of the subject, and the shadows are still able to define the features.

Try to avoid using a flash on your camera to take the picture. Using a flash eliminates most or all of the shadows.

    Do This

It is more visually appealing if your pet is not looking directly at the camera; a three-quarter view is always nice.

    Avoid This

Try to get down to your pet's level when you are taking the picture(s). Avoid looking down at your pet.
